Indonesia: Trade Outlook and Opportunities

Greetings from Jakarta!

In early May, NordCham Indonesia (local FinnCham) arranged a successful event with the Minister of Investment and Downstream Industry of Indonesia, Mr. Rosan Roeslani. The Minister gave a presentation on the current investment climate in Indonesia and answered questions from Nordic companies.

Based on the Minister’s remarks in the event, as well as observations and interactions with other local stakeholders, several sectors stand out as promising for Finnish companies considering the Indonesian market.

Minister Rosan discussing with Nordic companies

Indonesia has committed to ambitious sustainability targets, including a net-zero goal by 2060 or sooner. As it seeks to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, there is increasing demand for renewable energy technologies, especially in geothermal, wind, solar, and bioenergy. Finnish companies with expertise in smart grids, waste-to-energy, and water treatment systems should be well-positioned to support Indonesia’s green transition. Additionally, Indonesia’s young population and rapidly growing digital economy should create strong opportunities for Finnish companies in software development, cybersecurity, and education technology.

Current Trade Climate and Outlook

Many Nordic companies here are hopeful that the Indonesian business environment is improving steadily. In May’s event, Minister Roeslani emphasized reforms aimed at reducing bureaucracy and attracting foreign investment. While regulatory complexity and infrastructure gaps remain challenges, trade agreements such as IEU-CEPA, which is currently being negotiated, indicate a more open market in the future. However, although talk of deregulation sounds good, actions from the government are still awaited.

For Finnish exporters, Indonesia represents both a challenge and an opportunity. Success often depends on building strong local partnerships and committing to long-term engagement. But potential rewards are significant, especially in sectors aligned with Indonesia’s development goals.

This is my final blog post as a FinnCham intern. On a personal note, I have come to appreciate Jakarta more than I ever imagined. It is a busy, but oh so lively city. Chances are that I will be staying here a while longer.

Please feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn. Wishing you a great summer!
